Restoring the Joy of Reading
The Shift from Testing to True Learning
Reading and writing are not merely subjects to be tested—they are essential life skills. Yet, some students experience endless testing and rigid, scripted curricula, stifling the development of independent readers and strategic thinkers. Despite the constraints of mandated testing, countless Texas teachers work tirelessly every day to deliver the best instruction possible, but many students are still struggling.
In my 16 years supporting Texas school districts, I witnessed this firsthand. Students were often drilled on short passages and multiple-choice answers, bypassing the fundamental skills of decoding and deep comprehension. The rich experience of reading complete books and writing authentic responses has largely disappeared.
This is why I created The Home Reading Collective.
I left the public school system to close the gap between test-prep and true literacy. We move beyond the "formula" to teach your child the foundational skills necessary to decode any text and the cognitive tools required for deep reading and meaningful writing.
